Phonegap Apps

Application development using PhoneGap allows you to take an app written in HTML5 code and wrap it in a kind of casing that turns it into an integral device application, making it possible to distribute it from the relevant app store. Because HTML5 is based on an age-old standard with which programmers and many site developers are already familiar, building a PhoneGap app is very similar to building a pure HTML5 app and requires almost no tampering with the specific code of each device.

Currently it is supported by all popular operating systems and devices on the market, including iOS (Apple’s iPhone and iPad), Windows Phone (Microsoft, and more recently, Nokia), Android (Samsung, LG and many others) and even Blackberry (relevant especially for those developing apps for American users).

Moreover, PhoneGap allows for integration of code snippets into the app in the device’s integral language (for example, Objective C for iPhone) and as a result takes advantage of the device’s advanced features such as Bluetooth or even three-dimensional acceleration (for example, map-drawing) which generally can’t be accessed by HTML5.

How does PhoneGap actually work?

The way PhoneGap works is fairly simple: the interface of the development environment creates one or more browser windows in which it runs HTML5 code – alongside the device’s natural code. Similarly, PhoneGap comes with a number of ready-made plugins that enable easy access to popular features like your Facebook directory or the device’s internal contact list. Of course the option exists to develop further plugins because PhoneGap itself is very flexible and is based on open standards whose use is encouraged alongside native app development by the largest manufacturers in the industry.

Performance Versus Compatibility

Despite forming a bridge between the device’s native environment and HTML5, the performance of PhoneGap apps still can’t compete with those of truly native apps. However, when you want to develop simultaneously for a particularly large number of devices, development using PhoneGap is still the most efficient solution. Furthermore, every time the development environment is updated, applications become faster and more sophisticated when they are recompiled.
