Hybrid Apss

Today, most mobile apps are divided into two types: HTML apps based primarily on the HTML5 standard, or Native apps which are written directly in the programming language relevant to a specific operating system (for example, Java or C). Native apps will seemingly always be better and more fully able to exploit all the various capabilities of the device, especially when it comes to graphics and game development through standards like OpenGL.

Their disadvantages are longer development time and the need for broader knowledge of the world of programming, especially among those coming from the field of web app or website development.

Say Hello to Hybrid Apps

The good news is that there is a third type, and this is where we meet hybrid apps which literally are a mixed breed that includes the best of both worlds. In fact, this kind of app (called native or base in this context) creates a direct bridge to the browser through a common interface such as Javascript. This enables us to take advantage of the flexibility of modern browsers on the one hand and the advanced capabilities of native apps on the other. An option even exists to contain multiple instances of the same browser within a browser.

The link itself is performed technically through various development environments that bridge between the two worlds. PhoneGap, used also for writing pure HTML5 apps, is the most renowned, but a number of other environments exist on the market such as jQuery Mobile which is the conversion of the popular Javascript library with its multi-graphic effects originally developed for classic web use on Desktop computers.

Is there a downside to hybrid app development?

Unfortunately no solution is perfect, and development of hybrid apps has several significant drawbacks. First and foremost, the more dominance the integral part of the software has, the harder it is to convert it from Android to iOS or Windows Phone since the internal development tools  for each platform are different. In addition, web optimization is still not ideal when comparing a hybrid app to a mobile-responsive website. Finally, Google and Apple tend to favor native apps which have been adapted specifically to their devices and mainly if they have exclusivity, such that the desirability of hybrid apps in terms of position and rating in app stores is lower (that is, it is not likely that such an app would be selected by the editors, unless it is really revolutionary).
